9-Year-Old Stops Dog Attack with RNC

Drew Heredia of Bakersfield, CA is nine years old. Upon seeing a 12-year-old girl and her dog being attacked by a pit bull, he promptly jumped on the dog’s back and slapped on a rear naked choke, stopping the attack a la Ralph Gracie. Apparently the boy was able to restrain the dog until animal control arrived.

Heredia had been training BJJ for just a few months at Bakersfield Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It was a brave thing to do even for a grown man, so for a 9-year-old to decide to take on a 50-60 lb dog is just amazing. Also, it just goes to show how even at 9 years old boys will do just about anything to gain the favor of a girl. :)

The dog is in custody, and will be put down in 10 days. As a new dog owner (a pit bull mix), I find this to be the real tragedy in this story. I feel badly for the girl and her dog, but in most dog aggression cases, it’s really the owner who should be responsible for this. The fact that the dog was a pit bull should have very little to do with what the dog did. It’s sensationalistic journalism at its finest.
