Renato Magno Appears on The Unit
With there being so many Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools located in sunny California, it was just a matter of time that Brazilian jiu jitsu would hit the silver screen. The believability of fighting on TV or film has undergone a complete audit these recent years with MMA’s rise in popularity. It’s just not that easy to convince people that on-screen violence is really that violent anymore because people know what a real fight looks like now.
Make way for Renato Magno, the first Rigan Machado black belt and proprietor of Street Sports Jiujitsu. He’s the martial arts coordinator on the popular CBS series The Unit where he puts his real life fighting know-how to use creating believable action sequences. Renato appears on screen periodically as well, so keep an eye out for him.

The creator of the show is David Mamet, a student and friend of Renato’s. Mamet also wrote and direct military thriller Spartan in which Magno also appeared and served as martial arts choreographer.
